Smith, Joseph
► (1805-44) Jefe religioso estadounidense. Fue fundador del mormonismo. En 1830 publicó el Libro de mormón que, según él, era la traducción de un evangelio grabado en unas tablas de oro, revelación de Jesucristo resucitado a los judíos que emigraron a América, y que fueron los antecesores de los indios.

Fundador de la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días (ver mormón). Comenzó a experimentar visiones cuando era adolescente en Palmyra, N.Y. En 1827 sostuvo que un ángel le había guiado hacia donde estaban enterradas unas placas de oro que contenían las revelaciones de Dios, las que tradujo en el Libro del mormón (1830). Condujo a sus seguidores a Ohio, Missouri e Illinois, donde fundó el pueblo de Nauvoo (1839), que rápidamente se convirtió en el más grande del estado. Arrestado por traición después de que sus intentos por silenciar a disidentes mormones originaron desórdenes callejeros, fue linchado por una muchedumbre enfurecida que atacó la prisión donde estaba encarcelado. Su obra fue continuada por Brigham Young.
